This layer contains site boundaries and attribute data on Offshore Marine Protected Areas (MPA) in UK waters.
This layer is projected in WGS 1984 Geographic Coordinate System. Please see the ‘read me’ in the UK Offshore MPAs spreadsheet in for an explanation of the attribute table columns, and for further background information. We strongly recommend referring to this information before filtering data in this layer.
Note that SACs are listed in the Site Status column as either candidate SAC (cSAC) Site of Community Importance (SCI) or SAC depending on their stage in the designation process (http://data.jncc.gov.uk/data/5dc040a7-cf45-49d9-986c-f272a2ec9d91/Offshore-SAC-Designation-Process-web.pdf). MCZs in UK offshore waters currently comprise those designated by the Secretary of State (SoS) in England inshore, England offshore and Northern Ireland offshore waters ("MCZ - Secretary of State").
Site areas are in hectares, originating from a range of sources and projections according to designation type. SAC and SPA site areas are the values on the official site Standard Data Forms (calculated on a site-by-site basis). Nautre Conservation MPA site areas are the values given in the NautreScot and JNCC Site Summary Documents at designation in July 2014. Areas for SoS Tranche One offshore MCZs (designated November 2013) are the values given in the JNCC Site Summary Documents at designation in November 2013. Areas for SoS Tranche Two MCZs (designated January 2016) were calculated on a site-by-site basis in WGS 84 UTM Zone 29N-31N projections. Areas of SoS Tranche Three MCZs (designated May 2019) were calculated by JNCC on a site-by-site basis in either Albers Equal Area Conic (50.2N and 61.2N standard parallels) for offshore sites and joint inshore/offshore sites advised on by JNCC, or British National Grid for joint inshore/offshore sites advised on by Natural England. The Area of the West of Scotland site was calculated in ETRS1989 Lambert Azimuthal Equal-Area (EPSG: 3035).

DiGRock250k is a digital geological map showing the distribution of bedrock types in the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) area, representing the natural continuation of the onshore bedrock geology into the offshore. The bedrock divisions on the map represent the principal lithostratigraphical units (e.g. formations and groups) in the UK, ranging in age from Proterozoic to Cainozoic in age, as defined in the BGS Lexicon of Named Rock Units. This dataset can be used in conjunction with other BGS offshore datasets that include DiGSBS250k (Sea-Bed Sediments) and the DiGBath250k (Bathymetry) datasets. The bedrock geology below the sea-bed is of importance to a range of groups, including marine habitat mappers, marine spatial planners, the offshore construction and development sector, and the dredging and aggregate industries.
