Service Description: Alkalinity refers to water's ability, or inability, to neutralize acids. It is primarily a function of the carbonate, bicarbonate, and hydroxide content in water. It helps measure the sensitivity of a waterbody to acid inputs. Alkalinity is increased by urban drainage, as well as leachate from waste disposal sites, and activities such as pulp and paper mills and agriculture. There is no alkalinity guideline for the Protection of Aquatic Life.
